Lots of players will cycle through their control groups to see when they have to make a new unit.
I.E. A terran has his command center on 4, barracks on 5, and factory on 6.
Terran will do 456456456 and when a unit is about to finish they will hit the control group and make something new. So for example: 456456454s5d,6t to make an SCV, marauder, and thor.
At the beginning of the game, it is almost entirely spam; however, its done to keep on pace. I typically start early game with overlord on 2, hatch on 3, and initial drones on 4(i later re-assign 4 to my queens). I will do 234234234234 while using my mouse to make boxes below my hatch repeatedly(habit from BW due to no auto-mine rally points) then after about 5-6 boxes I will right click two separate mineral patches. It helps with mouse accuracy and speed.
Don't worry about your APM too much. SC2 only requires about 150apm to play effectively, unless you plan on winning the GSL. _________________ "I tend to thougoughly enjoy my encounters significantly more with 120+ types, as I find them more stimulating. 100-110 people are okay too operating at full capacity." - Paper_Boy
