What was the significance of the movie being held during 88? I'm thinking that it was either done on a whim, or he did it as an excuse to play 80s music. This bothers me more than anything else in the movie.

I think it fit the mood well that way
- religious beliefs of Kitty Farmer and co., even though it was a small town
- no computer, technological distractions
what year would you have set it in?

It's not about what year I would hold the movie in. Why did the writer/director choose 88? What i'm getting at is they could susbtitute 88 for any year in the 90s, or even the 2000s and it wouldn't matter. There was no emphasis on the present day culture, except for the election which could matter less.
The movie for the most part was enjoyable.

He's right about the mood. Look at how the kids spent their time outdoors instead of playing video games or going to paintball or something along those lines. Look at how they had family dinners and watched tv together. There was also a comment about men providing for the family. A lot of these things aren't so common nowadays and I know I wouldn't buy it if they had the year as 1998 or some other year in the 90s or 2000s. The relationship between him and his girlfriend was kind of old fashioned too, "do you want to go with me" and waiting for their first kiss. I also wouldn't expect something like that love and fear video to be taught in school nowadays. Some of the songs they used had an older feel to them as well.
