Sattelite Internet Connections
I know nothing about these at all. Could I get this on a laptop and if so would it be fast enough to play online poker? I heard the download is pretty good but that the upload sucks.

Yeah, you can set it up on a laptop. But you can't just take this thing around with you everywhere and expect to stay connected. You would have to be connected to a router, and if it's wireless you would have to be able to recieve the signal.
Also sattelite is expensive and shitty. Don't get it.

I was thinking about getting one of these during college. When I was in networking (last semester) we had to do information articles every month. One was satellite connections on laptops. I went to like mikeshardware.com or something like that and he had good reviews for it, saying that college students could IM people during classes, etc.

what is the point? just get a cable modem because they are fast and reliable...
i know my cable is very fast but latly they have been capping people b/c of lawsuits given to them by the RIAA that point sout a lot of music uploading coming from their IPs..
i bet sattelite already capped their BW so they won't get in trouble..
edit: they are making high speed internet just to make more money... that is how they are because it takes like a billion to get a sattelite up they go bad after 50 years.

i take that back. you can hook up your comp to cellphones that have the internet, but that sucks. the only good internet your gonna get with your laptop just walking around is being close to a wireless router

There is supposed to be a company that is developing a system of low orbit sattelites for high speed internet access. I will dig around for a link if I can find the article. It will not be available till at least 2006, but it is supposed to address the delay time, as well as provide some mobility.

sure for website games it will be very fast vs dialup
for true gaming it blows shit as you will have a best 1k+ ping
the secret you should know, there is a FAP policy, basicly you cant download like a pirate or they will cut your speed to slower than 56k
you get x amount of megs per hr if you go over they will limit you for awhile, they have some kind of formula thats easy to understand but i forget it
upload is 56k unless you get the 2way then it uploads fast but still the pings are 1k+
i use to get 60-80k sec download on average, sometimes it would break 100k
unless you are hardcoore with money to burn i wouldnt get it again _________________

the thing is with the high latency with satalite is the travel time to and from a satalite, i dont see how a low orbit bird would help much.
what is low orbit distance vs current satalites? _________________
