go make fun of all the people who bought gold right before it dropped like 30% ... then ask them if they regret it in 10 years.

theres been a lot of stuff going on one of the main bitcoin handlers (mtgox)

not sure what the fuss is all about, havent been folllowing in detail.... something with technical issues?

anyway, each (mtgox and blockchain) have their own exchange rate.

blockchain.info (which is not affected by mtgox) has had a stable rate between 600 and 750 usd per coin for the last 2 months. no substantial drops or rises. just mtgox.

thats what I know,

on a personal level, i haven't ever used mtgox wallets. just blockchains

edit:
theres 4 main bitcoin wallet handlers or exchangers if you will, (only mt.gox is with the issues)

these are the current exchange rates as of this writing:

BITSTAMP 640.80

MT.GOX 265.00

BTC-E 620.00 (<--blockchain)

CAMP BX 628.62

Silk Road 2 loses $2.7m in bitcoins in alleged hack

"I should have taken MtGox and Bitstamp's lead and disabled withdrawals as soon as the malleability issue was reported. I was slow to respond and too sceptical of the possible issue at hand," he said in the forum posting.

"In retrospect this was incredibly foolish, and I take full responsibility for this decision."

Despite Defcon denying that he had "run with the gold", several Silk Road 2 users questioned whether the operators of the site were involved or covering for people involved.

"Does that even sound plausible? Or does it make more sense that they were waiting for the right moment... so that they could retire comfortably," wrote aqualung.

"Imagine you run this site, you see a huge amount of money sitting right there, and you know that you can take all of it and easily blame it on a hacker," wrote cubensis.

It seems MtGox is no more. Here is a summary of the events that took place yesterday evening (2/24/14) for anyone who missed the action:

1.) MtGox allegedly lose 750,000 Bitcoins, according to an ALLEGED leaked document by MtGox, titled "Crisis Strategy Draft". TwoBitIdiot, who leaked the document, is a known person within the Bitcoin community.
http://two-bit-idiot.tumblr.com/post/77745633839/bitcoins-apocalyptic-moment-mt-gox-may-have-lost

2.) He then decides to leak the document to the public 1 - 2 hours later confirming this number, and within the document it says they are to rebrand as http://gox.com/ and lie their way out of this mess.
http://two-bit-idiot.tumblr.com/post/77760399932/update-on-mt-gox-this-document-appears-to-be

3.) After the document is leaked to everyone, MtGox halts trades immediately (Around 5 minutes after the leak)

4.) At this point, http://gox.com/ is still a parked domain, and not long after starts to redirect to http://mtgox.com/ (More information on the domain situation from chris45215, which basically confirms that MtGox were indeed planning to relaunch as Gox.com as explained in the leaked document. Further info on Domain Investing)
http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1yuopj/trading_disabled_on_mt_gox_its_happening/cfnye71
http://www.domaininvesting.com/andy-booth-sells-gox-com/

5.) After around 30 minutes, Coinbase, Blockchain, Circle and Kraken simultaneously release identical articles titled "Joint Statement Regarding the Insolvency of Mt.Gox" (Since then, some of the articles have removed the word "insolvency", but not all of them.)

6.) A further 5 minutes later, http://mtgox.com/ is taken completely offline.

7.) And now we are here, with not a single word from MtGox.

Note, I did not write this, original can be found here:

lol

I think the idea behind Bitcoin is interesting, but the implementation of it is doomed for failure.

Not to sound conspiracy theorist, but I wouldn't doubt if the government is actually involved in shutting down these sites in this particular case.

Clearly the solution is more deregulation. Obama had a hand in this. I can smell it.

lmao. 387 million dollars worth of bitcoins vanished from a completely unregulated currency exchange. Who saw that coming?

According to Ron Paul bitcoins could destroy the U.S. dollar. Unregulated markets ftw.

So true words.

A free bump to show why smurf_king still lives in a poor country, is poor and has to leech his neighbour's internet!

EDIT: I was so right not to read a thread or post in a thread which had concepts like 'investment', 'speculation', 'money' and 'smurfking' in the same space.
HAHA!

Cybercriminals made their move toward a new lucrative monetary source—cryptocurrencies.
An exploit attack against a Tokyo-based Bitcoin exchange led it to declare bankruptcy after it lost around 550,000 Bitcoins worth US$473 million.
The volatility of the Bitcoin ecosystem, owing to its unregulated nature, also showed the many risks tied to its use. Bitcoin-stealing malware and “get-rich-fast” scams that went after Bitcoin wallets also figured in the threat landscape.
Bitcoin threats were not limited to the PC threat landscape though. We saw a cryptocurrency-mining malware infect thousands of mobile devices, as attackers attempted to mine for Dogecoins and Litecoins.
Because Bitcoin use also provided anonymity, cybercriminals have taken to accepting the cryptocurrency as payment for malicious tools and services sold and rendered. The BlackOS software package creator, for one, preferred virtual currency payment over any other kind.

“Cybercriminals’ interest in Bitcoin, meanwhile, revolved around the fact that it shows the most promise and greatest adoption, presenting itself as a prime target for mining or theft.”

—Martin Rösler (Senior Director, Threat Research)
