Just sorted out the time with Evil~Ryu on ru. Its like I'm +8 hours on eastern time. So that would put the meeting at 2AM Friday for me. I don't think I'll be able to make it but if I do make it, should be for a max of 1h. I got to sleep a bit before going to work Smile

okay so... they have a few helpful staff members, but right now they're powerless to help us, because their coders/founder aren't responsive... and if they do add us, they probably won't be able to host our client either, which makes it uncertain whether we'd be able to draw from their existing community. for anything to happen, lance may have to get in touch with them and do the legwork for them. im not totally against that, since as long as it's run by voobly there's less to mistrust about lance. theyve also asked about donations. however, im not sure whether or not being hosted by them would be a gain in terms of hosting/ladder/lag/users etc... not as promising as i would have hoped.

Well, what i see as a result of our conversations:

1. What they can give us (if they decide to) is good fast hosting with about 100% garantee creating games for everyone. Also, their hardware is much better than everything we can reach using our vps hostings for $10.

2. They use IPX instead of bnet.
So, chat is working through their own client, same as a game.
Their chat looks qiute modern, much better than old war2 native one.
We will not be able to make/view war2insight replays (who cares).

3. Our site server.war2.ru will be still active, at least for attracting new people and download war2 combat or w/e. I'm pretty sure eighter the current combat will be compatible with voobly or it would be easy to make the new version.
Note that war2combat is not the only war2.ru client: it has been produced as the universal small war2 client for the network game and could be used everywhere you want.

4. I don't think they will take care of something more than include war2 inside voobly. I mean such things as antihack, palette rainbow bug and other small technical fixes. There are specifical bugs in war2 only and have to be fixed for only this game individually.
We have to do it ourselves. Community will be moved with the exising admins, social problems, questions for future.

5. Certainly, they will not take part in the war2 community groving up. They have their personal project: AOE.

6. I think, we will keep our resources: this forum, maybe the new forum, the site. While continuing support our community ourselves, there's no reason to move to voobly forums or w/e.

7. So, i don't see any changes in our general line for future except to change bnet server to voobly in several months (maybe year(s)).
So, let's do what we do! Tournaments, game and server research, site and forum updates.

hi iL, i have questions about 1) and 2)

1) Hosting will be good for everyone? Is that because it would be IPX instead of bnet? If that's true, it's good at least
2) Insight wouldn't work? I think it might still work? does it not work with IPX games? you don't have to start it until you are in the game room, so it doesn't seem like it would matter.

Very good summary by iL, I will just add a bit

2. I don't care too much about not having insight, but maybe it would just take a simple modification to make it work for IPX games. If the coder of insight is still around.

4. Warcraft 2 population is small compared to their biggest games like aoe2 and aom so they probably aren't going to spend too much time giving us extra features unless we can grow our population. I noticed the games with the most upgrades/features etc are the most popular ones.

However, she did say that if we wanted extra things like antihack we could raise donations for it to be done(if antihack is possible). I have played age of empires 2 on there and there antihack is supposed to stop maphacking among other things. Would be nice for war2, but we have the SS method to catch hackers so its not necessary.

5. They will not help, but I think just having War2 on a site like Voobly would help to grow our population.

I mean they use better hardware, better data channels.
They also implemented the software (nat traversal, upnp, kind of tunneling).
I mean your lags depend on your own channel, but real ip problem could be resolved, Some routing problems could be resolved also. That's not bad.

Well, i didn't try actually. Just read the readme file: you should join bnet to use it. Even viewing your replay on your local computer requires bnet.

RE: Insight, Insight does not care about the network protocol. It reads the local machines memory addresses to get it's data. It works in both IPX and Bnet. You can test it by using IPXWrapper and starting a replay. It will work just fine. The recording will work regardless of where the game is being played. Also, iL didnt quite get all the technical specs of voobly correct. They use a VPN/Nat Traversal + IPX setup. Thus, war2 will need to be run using IPXWrapper or DosBox in order to work on Voobly. IPXWrapper will be the easiest method. The bottom line is that hosting would work 100% for anyone except for those in China which they have a different server for. I'm not sure what issues they ran into with the chinese but it is something that came up. They have a whole separate site for chinese: http://www.vooblycn.com/

Lance, did you contact any the elusive voobly admins, and did you get any responses?

Cool! All of this sounds pretty positive, though the primary downside is that no one with authority has weighed in as to whether or not there's a chance of WC2 actually being added? Did they give us odds, or is the whole thing up in the air at this point?

It sounded like the people trying to help us add War2 had no idea how to get a response from the top guys at voobly. So anything honestly sounded pretty unlikely.
