 | Has anyone watched the TV series True Detective? I just read about it and it sounds like it could be amazing...a pulp detective series that incorporates ideas from H.P Lovecraft type horror. The creative team have influences like Grant Morrison, David Lynch, Brian DePalma, H.P Lovecraft, Thomas Ligotti, and Jean Pierre Melville |

its like the best show ever, its probably the best mini series (though it might turn out to be more of an ongoing anthology thing) i've ever seen

and yeah the lovecraft/ligotti/weird cosmic horror stuff is much more hinted at than made explicit, kinda like the best horror stories in that genre anyway. nothing explicitly supernatural ever happens in the show, it just has that atmosphere of everything being directed by some kind of horribly malevolent force beyond comprehension etc

the show runner has specifically name dropped thomas ligotti and laird barron as influences, and you can really see it in the show

i liked it, even though parts were slow. i don't know if i would've liked it if it hadn't had two of my favorite actors in the lead roles! they really made the first season great. i could see it turning into some cheesy crapfest in a couple seasons though, even though season 1 was really good.

riddick took the storyline they made of riddick in chronicles and turned it back into monster mashing badass criminal vs bounty hunters vs monsters. being what it is i liked it a helluva lot more than i liked chronicles.

enders game was a book written for teenagers during the cold war and turned into a movie made for MMORPG addicted teenagers of today. didn't like it, though i've read the book 3 times. also the author of the book was a noted homophobe and the bugs in the book are called "buggers" just a interesting fact.

Ender's game was a short story written in like early 80s I think and then turned into a novel. I have never associated it with the cold war. They really needed 2 or 3 movies to tell this story properly.

The movie was true to the book if you ripped out like every tenth page of it to create a movie script. Really bad choice I think to jam it into one movie. That book series is a big franchise. Anyone who did not read the book would have a really had time following it IMO.

 | I never read the book but the premise for ender's game is insultingly stupid. why would children with undeveloped brains ever be better commanders than young adults? |
