what is the best strategy to fight a close combat, when they are next to you? What has worked the best for you, and why?

On GoW I build guard towers near or inside the bad guy's town and kill him, except at the top right spots I build grunters and kill him. Towers work good because they are fast, powerful, have many repairable hit points and have long range so you can shoot far and protect them by sealing 'em in. Grunters work well at 12/2 because they build faster than towers and the path makes it to hard to seal up and defend against them.
