acutally, eminems first album, infinite was before he was 'slim shady', it wasnt hardcore at all (and he sold 3,000 copies of it.. not alot, but good for a 19 year old white rapper... he was 19 when he released it), because the record label he was with said he should rap about his problems in a positive way... and he even hints at this in certain songs ex: "They say i should rap positive, how the fuck am i supposed to be positive when theres nothing around me positive... I rap about shit ive been though, shit ive seen" - Slim Shady LP

also, on the Slim Shady LP, he had many songs that were very expressive without being hardcore, try downloading 'Rock bottom' or 'If i Had'

Here are some lyrics to If I had

What is life?
Life is like a big opstical
in front of your optic to slow you down
and just when you think youve passed it
its gonna come back around and tackle you to the damn ground
what are friends
friends are people who think are your friends
but they are really your enimies
with secret identites
and disguises to hide their true colors
so just when you think your close enough to be brothers
they come and cut your throat when you aint looking
what is money?
moneys what makes a man act funny
money is the root of all evil
money will make those same friends come back around
swearing that they was always down
what is life?
Im tired of life..

thats a great example of eminems artistic ablity, that IS on the Slim Shady LP..

And yes, sappy is parcially right, when a band 'sells out' its mainly cause you lost your band... I remember when I liked korn way back in 95.. and everyone at school doged me like crazy for listening to such 'gay music' then a couple years later, they are #1.. I was pissed off... i said they sold out, but really, i was just pissed cause I lost my private band...

so ghost, dont give me this shit that eminem is only popular cause he is hardcore... he has real talent...

Dr Dre discovered eminem at a freestyling contest in cali, Dre's friend had him listen to eminems tape, and dre was like 'shit, i gotta meet him'... when Dre met em, his jaw dropped when he saw he was white... so yeah, he does have talent...

Well actually I remember hearing that the 3k copies sold was a crushing failure and he got dropped by his current record company, but I'm not sure so please correct me if I'm wrong. But I'll acknowledge he has some talent. Anybody who succedes at anything has to have at least SOME talent. But his lyrics aren't good just because he says "what is life?" and other so-called "deep" questions. There are plenty of other artists with much better lyrics than Eminem. Also, you would have to be a complete idiot to say his "hardcore" lyrics do not contribute to his popularlity. If his music was still relatively happy-go-lucky he would not have recieved one tenth of the attention he has. He's really not the genius some people make him out to be just because he "keeps it real".

And I also partially agree with Sappy, but some bands just plain sell out. I mean, with their first three albums I'm pretty sure there was a good amount of time between time, around 2-3 years. They get popular with Follow the Leader, and then their next CD comes out like a year later. That's quite a coincidence

The Record company he was with at the time of infinite, was Web Entertainment.. a very low profile record company... infact, im 99% sure that eminem left Web to go to Interscope/Aftermath (Dr Dre)

yes, the 3k copies sold was a crushing failure... they were expecting him to do very well... since he was the only rapper reperesenting detroit at the time... hell even michigan... he did very well locally, about 2k of those copies sold were in the detroit area, it was common for me to hear some of his stuff on the radio

where I am from all the people will buy whatever shit their friends tell them tobuy regardless of wether or not they even like that style. They all just want to listen to the same thing. And everyone has to admit that yes, rap does take some talent. But some of the crap I hear on the radio is just sad. They sing about the stupidest stuff ever. I know I don't give a damn how many friggin prostitutes you have and how many pimps you buds with. I don't know how anyone could think that is good music.

ok, well, I certainly don't believe this. The real view on life then? I do not have prostitutes, nor do I want them. I ain't a pimp. I guess I am just living in a fantasy world then.

Whats coming through is alive
Whats holding up is a mirror
whats singing songs is a snake, it is
Looking to turn my piss to wine
they're both totally void of hate and..
killing me just the saaaaame , now
snake behind me hisses, what my damage coulde have been
my blood before me begs me open up my heart again
and I feel this coming over like a storm again , I feel this coming over like a storm again , considerately
Venomous voice tempts me , drains me, bleeds me, leaves me cracked and empty, drags me down like some sweet, gravity
snake behind me hisses, what my damage could have been, my blood before me begs me open up my heart again and I feel this coming over like a storm again , I feel this coming over like a storm again NOOOOOW
I AM TOO
CONNECTED TO YOU, SLIP AWAY, FADE AWAY
DAYS AWAY I
STILL FEEL YOU
TOUCHING ME
CHANGING ME and
considerately killing me
considerately killing meehee
without the skin, here
beneath the storm
Under these tears now
The walls came down
and as the snake is drowned
and as I look in his eyes my fear begins to fade
recalling all of the times
I have died
I will die
Its alright
I don't mind
I DONT MIND
I DONNNNT MINNNNNNNNNDDDDDDDDDDDDD
I AM TOO CONNECTED TO YOU
SLIP AWAY
FADE AWAY
DAYS AWAY I
STILL FEEL YOU
TOUCHING ME
CHANGING ME and
considerately killing mee, considerately killing mehee and
considerately killing meee

good song and Sypher, yea, if you want people to understand what you mean in cases where it could be taken in different ways... you should go into detail.
