It's been done in the past. Brackets/Tier levels. I must say, it would be rather amusing to watch 2 people place their hall 10 miles from a mine, and battle it out for a monetary prize pool. Everyone pretty much knows everyone else and are very capable of placing people in the proper tier just on their experience with the game and players in question alone. The issue would be trying to keep the smurfs out of the lower tiers.
If you advertised it enough with something like this:
"Novice War2 Tournament, come play against others who have never played the game and battle for a small monetary prize pool. All you have to do is verify that you've never played the game before by providing your real name on facebook and you will be matched with another player who also has never played the game before." Or something along these lines. If you can somehow verify that they truly are new, it would make for some interesting games. I'm sure no smurf would be able to pass a facebook test since everyone knows everyone else and they would be spotted by someone rather quickly. FB can be a good way to verify a person's real identity simply by looking at it's history and it's friends list. But I do agree however, giving Viruz, PosCow, Shotgun, Swift, etc a cut of the cash really isnt doing War2 any good. They are already here, we dont need to entice those types of players. It's the new players that need enticing.
