Haven't read others. I keep hearing Norwegian Wood is a must read but I guess I can buy Sheep Chase instead to make you happy =]

Yeah well Hard-Boiled Wonderland was 0wnage so...

I've read portions of Finnegans Wake, it's interesting and worth a look at but don't expect to actually finish or "get" it without being a Joyce scholar, having a master's degree, or having the patience to read it through multiple times along with a lot of critical essays and annotations

no, ulysses is a difficult read but it's much more "readable," though i myself haven't finished it (read about 300 pages a year and a half ago and have had it on the back burner since)

books aren't scary and if you put some serious effort into reading a difficult book you'll come out a better person for it

Ulysses was meant to be a literary and linguistic experiment, not a novel to be read for enjoyment. I don't get why people get a hard on over this novel and always say it is one of top X novels ever written. Yes, it is important in terms of literary technique but thinking it is a good novel to casually read for this reason is akin to suggesting, "If you read any one book in your whole life, read the Webster's Unabridged Dictionary." If you are not a literary scholar, I doubt you will get any real utility from reading Ulysses aside from the realization that language is a very powerful and adaptable tool, but this aspect has nothing to do with the actual subject matter or plot of the novel.

I usually get my books at the flea market near my parent's house or at the Salvation Army/thrift shops in my city. You can usually find brand new books (and solid titles too) for $0.25-$1, and even hard covers are usually no more than $2.

That may be true but even if that were Joyce's purpose in writing it (which I think is debatable) I don't think that really changes the actual experience of reading the book. I'm not too big on the authorial intent school of thought. Personally I really enjoy reading Ulysses and I find it to be an entertaining and even an emotionally rewarding experience beyond just "oooh that's a neat way to use language." I certainly agree it is not something to read casually in the same way one would read a Stephen King novel or something though.

I mean if you genuinely enjoy the plot, that's fine, but I don't think the story itself is anything special. People who say stuff like "If you must read one book, read Ulysses" usually don't know what the fuck they are talking about.

Well yeah, the plot in isolation is certainly nothing special, just like the plot of a lot of "great books" isn't anything special. It's the way the story is told rather than the story itself. I don't really disagree with your basic point though, canonizing in general is pretty dumb.

keep in mind the person that told me that was a 70 year old english professor. the language alone was probably better than viagra for him.

i think it's a little silly to get wound up over something like that. maybe that's just his way of recommending a book he enjoys a lot.

The History and Discovery channels work fine for me. Who has time to read? Unless you're single or going on a plane trip, I really don't see how you have the time unless you're someone who can open up a book for 10 minutes and throw your bookmarker in. I'm not like that and I read pretty fast.

it's not that hard to find time to read. that's like saying how do you guys find the time to play WoW or counter-strike, unless you're the type that can start playing and then disc after 10 minutes? or how do you find the time to watch tv? it sounds like reading is just very low on your list of priorities and that's fine, but a lot of people prefer it to tv or online gaming.

i don't understand your history/discovery channel comment. most of the books mentioned in this thread were fiction novels and not necessarily read for educational purposes. a lot of people read for entertainment.

A good series of books to read, for fantasy lovers, is the Tad Williams series, Memory Sorrow and Thorn.

I don't know how to time how much I can read unless there's a standardized test somewhere, but I do know that a 400 page book usually takes me about an hour and a half. If it's a book I've read before I've done them in under an hour.

Non-Fiction takes me longer simply because I tend to want to absorb it more and I don't exactly use my imagination. One thing about reading fiction versus non-fiction--for me anyways--is that my imagination usually can fill in any blanks. So even though I will skip words like: the, and, went, through; I only need to pick out one or two words in a paragraph and then I know what the whole paragraph is about.

It's hard to explain unless you actually do it. Confused

As for this comment, you've got it low on your priorities like Chris said. I will usually read a book before bed at least every second day.

wow that's really fast. i can do about 100 pages in an hour, a little more if i'm real into the story, but i read every word. i just worked on being able to read like 5 or 6 words at a time so i can get a line done in 2 or 3 glances. the other thing that REALLY helps is training yourself not to sound out words in your head as you read them. if you sound every word out you're almost limited by the speed at which you speak.

you guys have superhuman comprehension skills to go along with your high words/hour?

generally the faster you work through a book the less you get out of it

If I'm reading for enjoyment, why would I want to read 5 or 6 words at a time? I'm not in any rush to finish, I'll go one word at a time. I sure don't have any interest in reading 400 pages in an hour. However, not insulting fantasy books here, but that kind of stuff you can probably fly through a bit.

yeah it took about a month or two to get to where i don't have to try to go fast to do it. i just concentrated on doing 2 words at a time instead of 1, then i went up to 3 at a time once i was comfortable with 2, etc. i can do 5 or 6 now without even thinking about it. you don't even really need concentrate on comprehending... it's the same as i was when i did 1 word at a time. none of it's possible if you sound every word out though so i spent like a week or 2 reading constantly and concentrating really hard on reading by sight. i've heard of people who can do multiple lines at a time with the same strategy but i don't think my eyes are good enough for that. i'm far sighted.

I think EyeQ uses the same theory but they have games and things that help train you. i snatched it one time on oink but i haven't ever gotten around to installing it. i'll try it out some time.
