@WojYahooNBA: The Toronto Raptors select Bruno Cabocio of Brazil, a 6-9 PF. Worked out for no teams.

Jonathan Givony ‏@DraftExpress Apr 30
Agent Eduardo Resende says Brazilian Bruno Caboclo entered the draft to gain exposure after an injury-riddled season

CBSSports:
Bruno Caboclo | SF, Brazil
Height: 6-9 Weight: 200
Sure? 6-9. Versatile. If heīs a steal, itīs another Masai Ujiri score... I have no idea.

they got a guy who wont really be playing this season becuase of injury. then they got a guy whos stuck overseas for 2 more years. so theyre going to be terrible again this season and get another top pick. also they got a few other picks in the trade for the foreign guy. maybe the year after next they sitll suck and get another top pick lol. most extreme hording of rookies/picks ever

Since we're all in a state of mass confusion, here's a potential reason for why we don't know much about Bruno Caboclo: Masai has been orchestrating behind the scenes this whole time.

We're all confused because this pick is straight out of left field, off everyone's draft boards. So we're left asking what does the Raptors FO know that other teams don't? Are we crazy for taking an unknown quantity?

What we do know right now is that Cabo has the build of a physical specimen. A 6'8" 19-year-old with a 7'7" wingspan[1] who averages low numbers in a small sample size, against B-grade competition. It not necessarily calming to know that he's teammates with Araujo.

But turning over a couple of internet rocks points to a reason why we know so little about him. Because it was designed this way.

The Brazilian media suggests that he's working with Alex Saratsis[2] . The same agent of the Greek Freak and Dennis Schroeder.

There was also some chatter about him on the Spurs Talk forum[3] :

In April his agent said Bruno wasn't going to stay in this draft: "Bruno and I talked and decided to enter the Draft. We'll evaluate what will happen. He suffered many injuries this year and lost a bit of exposure he had. We want to recover it, we want people to know him more. But the project is he going to NBA only next year's draft. He needs to gain more experience." But somewhere in the last three months they changed their mind and he is staying in the draft. Article In Portugese[4]

There was a rumor that he could have a promise to be drafted in the end of the second round by an Eastern team. This was later confirmed by Marc Stein:

As story goes, Raps promised to take Brazilian project Caboclo w/No. 37 & that's why he skipped all workouts. Grabbed him at No. 20 instead.

Indications are Caboclo never would've made it to 37, so Raps wise to gamble if they like him that much. Other teams were quietly in hunt

It also turns out Caboclo played in the 2013 Basketball Without Borders Tournament (South America). Masai happens to be a Director of the program and frequently travels to international events and tournaments. In fact, this was how Masai met a 17-year-old Greivis Vasquez in Caracas before arranging for him to go to prep school in Maryland.

Here's what could have happened: Masai came to an agreement with Saratsis that the Raptors would guarantee him being drafted this year in exchange for skipping all other workouts. This move hides talent and undervalues his potential. It also works in Caboclo's favour because he wouldn't need to rev up the hype machine for next year and be left wondering about his draft stock.

TL;DR Masai leverages his position as a Director of Basketball Without Borders to travel around the world in search of talent. It's an expensive exercise for FOs to have reliable foreign scouts and using BWB as a conduit helps the Raptors FO reach places that other teams don't bother to look. Masai realized the potential of Caboclo and decided to protect this undervalued asset by striking a deal with his agent. In exchange for not working out for any other teams, Masai has a handshake deal to draft this unheralded Brazilian. It takes a diamond in the rough off the radar of most teams and allows us to make an opportunistic play. Masai is basically a basketball spy.

they intended to submit Bruno as their 37th pick but accidentally handed in the wrong one at 20

We should do a 10-team keeper league $50 buy-in next year.

Bosh is an idiot for opting out, the over paid bum is gonna have to take a serious pay cut now. Even Haslem has been brainwashed into thinking he's a valuable asset

the whole thing is really a huge rigged system to get LeBron a ring for ratings and money.

watch him end up with Durant or kobe - some1 to carry him like wade did - but LeBron will be the "star"

I do feel like I have a lot of hatred and biased opinions toward LeBron - Maybe he should man up and go back to Cleveland - I might respect him again (providing he doesn't throw play-off games)

Ya its absurd as Isiah Thomas, Larry Bird Magic Johnson n& Dr. J teaming up together in the 80s just for a better ring count. A championship means more when you truly compete against the best not just round up an artificial dream team. Wade is better than Lebron, much higher winning % in the finals, if he didn't get knee problems it would still show. I'm not worried, next year it will be:
Kobe, Carmello, Parsons, Eric Bledsoe, Gasol. Then, Ariza , Swaggy p & Julius Randle off the bench^^^

I mean we should just crown the Lakers now

Hmmm sounds like you have really bad opinions about the NBA. You think LeBron threw playoff games and you think D-Wade carried him lol. If LeBron stays in Miami it's with a pretty good bosh and a past his prime wade, why would that not be deserving respect? why do you hate people for putting winning over making another million dollars?

all of those guys played with hall of famers you fucking retard

isiah - joe dumars, dennis rodman, bill laimbeer (not a hall of famer but very good)
bird - robert parish, kevin mchale, bill walton
magic - kareem, james worthy, bob mcadoo (also not HOFer but very good)
dr. j - moses malone, george mcginnis (one of the best players to not be in the HOF)

that's why all these criticisms of lebron are retarded. it's especially ironic coming from you - did you already forget kobe demanding a trade after missing the playoffs, which led to the lakers trading for gasol and signing ron artest?

uh im sure bill walton is in the hall of fame, injuries or not. he was the best player in college, 2 championships at UCLA, best player in the NBA for a couple years, also 2 championships at the nba level.

walton is one of the goats, i havent googled it, but i dont need to, hes definitely in the hall of fame.
