Where should I live

I'm moving and have a lot of possible options. I don't have offers at all of these places but I'm applying for jobs at all of them, so let's pretend I got all of them somehow. Help a brother out! Tell me what sucks the most, what is best, etc.

I've never spent any real time in Roanoke VA but its a really pretty area and it seems nice when I drive through it on I-81. Thanks for reading and good luck OP.

i've never spent significant time in any of these places. But I would've also said Roanoke, VA. You should definitely not make your decision based on this poll, though, because we are not well informed.

I'm a little disillusioned with academia. There are many problems with it. The system is broken, and so many graduate students and lower level faculty are under-payed and taken advantage of. I'm done with the politics, trifles, and misplaced priorities of the colleges. I'm turning down a chance at a position at a good university shortly for these reasons.

I'm going to teach at a high school, no joke. I've always been a little wacky. Not many people in my program have ever done this, but I have no regrets. I want to actually positively affect the next generation in some way. I don't want to contribute to the giant money-hungry beast of academia that is the source of so many people's pain including my own as a graduate student. It feels good.

I also now have the advantage of choosing where I live! Smile

i hear you. i've got friends that are getting phds in other areas and i've heard very similar exploitation stories. luckily my phd is in business (even though it's basically the same as an i/o psychology degree), and business schools have the luxury of having rich donors and lots of people that will gladly pay thousands of dollars in exchange for an MBA. i think high school teaching is very noble of you and will probably be fun. i was a middle school teacher for 2 years, which is different from high school but still similar in a lot of ways, and even though it wasn't for me i definitely had fun doing it. good luck!

i live in north close to Texas, Michoacan state is south.

Michoacan is ran by armed civilians called 'auto-defensas' or self-defendendants due to 12 years of lack of government and the cartels being infiltrated in police and within the government in many levels reaching even the governor himself... hell the idiotic fool we have as president is implicated Razz

in brief, these 'street gangs' are a good thing (relatively speaking). they've killed many cartel lords (or at least made them run away) and seized their properties.

My sister-in-laws family lives there. One of her cousins was murdered in a coffee shop while he was on the internet and those 'auto-defensas' put down a curfew and found the murder and chopped his head off. Crazy eye for an eye shit for sure, but I guess they are last resort.

LOL. Won't be playing "full time" but I will play off-and-on once again in not too long. I will GTFO of school for good in a week, then will have time to waste on war2 if you want to pwn the only other 2 players in the world who happen to be playing at the same time.

yeah but those guys need to fund their activities as well and they've already started extorting the local populations similar to the cartels. in the short term they may be an improvement but armed vigilante gangs unaccountable to the law are just going to exacerbate the problem in the long term. of course the mexican govt obviously can't handle the cartels either for a lot of reasons (corruption, lack of resources etc) and i don't blame locals for turning to guys like these over the corrupt police (even though in a lot of cases there's probably a lot of bleed over between those two groups). as usual the answer is communism
