good post i found

quote:
Introduction

Before I recently wrote about the Western Playoff Races, I hadn't considered how big of a deal the race for the East's third seed would be. I haven't noticed much discussion about this on this sub, and there really should be a lot more chatter.

The difference between the third and fourth seed in the East is huge. The third seed gets to play Washington or Charlotte — both solid teams of course (the Bobcats have come on very strong recently), but obviously more preferable than any of the higher seeds.

Then they get the chance to play Indiana, whose recent struggles are well publicized (to the point where they're no sure thing to get that far).

On the other hand, the team who's unlucky enough to fall to the fourth seed lands in a world of pain: play an extremely good Brooklyn team in the first round. And if you're lucky enough to survive that, you get Miami. The chances of making a deep playoff run are at least 4-5 times higher for the third seed compared to the fourth seed.

Both teams are tied right now in the standings, with a 45-32 record, and five games left for each. Who has the upper hand the rest of the way?
Tiebreakers

Throw out the head-to-head matchups (tied 2-2), throw out the conference records (Chicago has the advantage), if these two teams are tied at the end of the season Toronto gets the third seed every time.

Why? Since they're leading the Atlantic Divison, and the Bulls aren't doing the same in the Central, the Raptors get the benefit of the tie break every time. The same would apply to Brooklyn if they somehow gained two games on this pair, an unlikely possibility.

Basically, Chicago must finish with a better record than Toronto. No way around this.

Interestingly enough, the two teams have all their remaining games on the same day (from the league that brought you a three-way round-robin for the last two Western playoff spots to end the season). Both only have one SEGABABA, both at home v. Eastern bottom-feeders (although Orlando will also be on a back-to-back).

It seems to me, however, that Toronto has a clear scheduling advantage with its remaining games. Not only do they play the two worst teams in the league (along with one that has tried to stake claim to that title in recent weeks), they also get a pair of games against the flailing Knicks — with the road tilt coming on a back-to-back for New York.

The Verdict

Provided they manage to stay healthy and don't start any Indiana-type shenanigans, the Raptors will be favored in every one of these games and should lose one at the very most. Not only will they break the franchise record for wins (47, set twice), they have a good chance at running the table and breaking the 50-win barrier for the first time ever (though they've got a long ways to go if they want to catch up to Tim Duncan).

In a realistic scenario where Toronto drops one of these five games, Chicago must finish with a perfect record. Of course, they've got a much tougher road if they want to do that — a road game in Minnesota (although the Wolves face the Spurs at home the night before), a road game in New York, and the season finale in red-hot Charlotte are all games the Bulls could lose.

They could do it, of course, but realistically they're probably going to drop at least one — in which case they'd need Toronto to fall in two, a much less likely scenario.

Chicago has done well in recovering from what seemed like a lost year, coming as far as to tie Toronto in the standings. But Toronto has the tiebreaker and the much easier schedule, so Chicago should start preparing for another series with Brooklyn (in this scenario, it's tough to gauge Miami's response — will they be relieved they only have to face one of these two teams, or apprehensive because they must face one of the two?)

EDIT: I did not mention Brooklyn as a serious challenger for either the third or fourth seed. They're two losses back and lose the tiebreaker to both the Raptors and Bulls, so they'd need one or both of those two teams to lose at least three games (and go undefeated themselves!).

Toronto this year: possibility for 50 win season

i agree...lebron got fouled like 3 times on that play. i understand them not calling the 2 reach-ins at that point in the game, but the "block" was all lebron's hand at the rim and should be called

Isn't the hand considered an extension of the ball?

Yes, that's why Mason's swat isn't a foul.

that IS the rule but i refuse to believe it means you can just grab someones hand when he's holding the ball and pull their hand away

hitting the hand was the block. take away the contact on the hand and maybe his pinky touched the ball for a sec? there was basically nothing except hand

I think their issues go beyond needing rest.

i have difficulty imagining anything other than a spurs / heat rematch at this point. i think they were trying to be bold and not going with obvious predictions.

i do not have difficulty imagining the thunder taking out the spurs. i would say the spurs are only slight favorites over okc. and that's not to mention gsw, hou, lac, ... the west is fairly unpredictable. heat already won the east. i thought the pacers would beat them initially. but now ...

Spurs defense is superior to any team in the west, only team that has a chance of beating them in a series is OKC because of Durant.
